Painting kōhatu (stones) is a great way to unleash your inner artist!

You will need

  • Kōhatu (stones or pebbles) big enough to paint on
  • Coloured acrylic paint (small test pots)
  • A couple of paintbrushes (different sizes)
  • A permanent marker
  • Coloured markers (optional)

What to do

  • Wash and dry your kōhatu.
  • Use a medium-sized brush to paint one side of your kōhatu (or leave it unpainted).
  • Leave to dry then paint the other side.
  • Once dry, use your marker to draw pattern outlines.
  • Use the small paint brush to paint on designs.

Get creative!

  • Make a special kōhatu with the name of a loved one who is no longer here.
  • Make small kōhatu into magnets for your fridge.
  • Use your painted kōhatu to decorate your garden.
  • Make your very own pet kōhatu (with hair and goggly eyes).
  • Write an inspirational message on one.
